BareBones Youth Past Production
Around the World with Class
A Memory of Lizzie
by Nick Warburton and David Foxton
In the last couple of years the youth company was blessed with a large number of members who had joined us in the early days of the group. Now being sixteen, these members left us at the end of 2013, thus changing the numbers, average age and balance of the company. Now, with a very much smaller and younger membership, the youth company has chosen to present two one-act plays for their spring 2014 production. Plays which would not have provided appropriate vehicles for the old company but present just the right challenge and opportunities to the new young group.
AROUND THE WORLD WITH CLASS SIX by NIck Warburton
This beautifully crafted little play takes a class of bored young schoolchildren and presents them with a challenge proposed by a maverick supply teacher, Mr Parker. Parker leaves them a note suggesting that in his absence they should re-enact Sir Frances Drake's
circumnavigation of the earth in 1577. What a great opportunity to escape the boredom of the history text book and the list of dry meaningless dates!
A MEMORY OF LIZZIE by David Foxton
Lizzie Borden was aquitted of the murder of her father and step-mother in Massachusetts in 1892. This play, set in a school playground in 1872 depicts Lizzie and her friends in 'flash forward', an unusual but powerful device which allows us to look at Lizzie's potential for murder. Did she really kill her parents? If not, then who did? The play is punctuated with statements taken from transcripts of the trial 20 years later. It's a powerful piece of theatre.
